A Year of Climate Hope: Reflecting on Our Journey to Net-Zero

Hey there, fellow eco-warriors! It's time for a little heart-to-heart chat. 🌍💚

Over the past year, I've been neck-deep in some enlightening debates about our family's quest to reach net-zero emissions. It's been a thrilling ride filled with insights, realisations, and moments of climate despair to climate hope.

Now, let's take a moment to check in, see where we're at, and if "The Plan" - to reach netzero - is still the North Star guiding our journey.

Checking in emotionally, I'm even more motivated and engaged in the fight for climate hope than when this idea first sprouted in my mind. The more I learn, the more I'm convinced that every action we take, no matter how seemingly small, has a purpose, even if the impacts are different.

I've ridden the rollercoaster of climate emotions, from moments of despair to bursts of hope. And now, armed with knowledge, I firmly believe it's collective action that will truly move the needle. As I scroll through social media, I come across countless clever quips and anecdotes that express this sentiment perfectly. Here's one that hit me right in the feels: "The emissions from private jets in the last three years were more than those of Uganda, a country of 46 million people."

But you know what? That knowledge doesn't discourage me; it empowers me. I understand that adding my voice to campaigns and advocating for change can be more impactful than reducing my family's plastic packaging. But that isn't stopping me from thinking we still need to take individual actions (especially in high-income nations like Australia). Every step we take on this journey matters.

Through our individual actions, we're not only reducing our carbon footprint but also becoming role models for change. We're educating ourselves and those around us about the importance of transition and sustainability. And perhaps most importantly, we're fostering empathy—a deep understanding of the challenges and triumphs that come with making sustainable choices.

In a wonderfully serendipitous twist, our journey towards a more sustainable life has aligned with some changes in my financial situation. As my salary dipped and the cost of living rose, the goals of acting sustainably seamlessly blended with the necessity of trimming expenses. It's like the universe gave us a gentle nudge in the right direction.

So, let's keep the momentum going, my eco-superstars! The journey to net-zero continues, fueled by our collective efforts, shared knowledge, and unwavering hope for a greener, brighter future. Together, we can make a world of difference. 💪🌿✨

Some thoughts on collective action

Hey there, change-makers! 🌍💪 I'm going to keep educating myself and build my muscle for adaptation and empathy through our family journey. But I'm also adding a new set of actions to my goals, branching out into the world of climate activism - stay tuned as I write about how my first visit to a Climate campaign and lobbying workshop went.

What even is collective action? What does it look like?

Let's talk about the incredible power of collective action in driving the changes we want to see in government policies and corporate practices. It all starts with your name, and here's how you can make a real impact:

1. Add Your Name and Voice:

  • Signing petitions and participating in online lobbying campaigns often require just your name and a few clicks. Your support amplifies the call for change.

2. Raise Your Voice in Writing:

  • Take it up a notch by writing letters to your MP, sharing your thoughts in local newspapers, or engaging in council discussions. Your name and opinions become a powerful force.

  • Respond to requests for consultation on legislative or regulatory changes. Your name on these submissions adds weight to your stance.

3. Be Bold, Speak in Person:

  • Request meetings with local councils or politicians to personally share your opinions. You don't need to be an expert; your voice as a constituent matters and many climate campaigning organisations will provide you with a playbook of key messages and how to go about the process. Convservation Council of WA is one such organisation.

4. Unite with Organisations:

  • Rally the support of your organisation or community group. Add their name to the chorus against climate change. Your collective voice speaks volumes.

5. Support Behind the Scenes:

  • Not keen on the spotlight? That's okay! Make a difference by supporting climate activists in various ways. Make tea, bring snacks, look after children, or volunteer to keep campaigners active.

Shifting Corporate Practices:

  • Join petitions and social media campaigns that hold corporations accountable.

  • Create change from within your workplace by advocating for sustainability.

  • Vote with your wallet; support climate-conscious companies and boycott climate inconsiderate ones.

Whether you're boldly holding a placard or quietly making tea behind the scenes, every action contributes to collective climate action. Your name has the power to inspire change and protect our planet. Let's do this together! 🌿💚✨

Stay tuned as I prepare my reflections on the most powerful individual changes we've made over the course of our Mid Green journey so far....
